I love having Japanese meals at home, and making my own vinegared rice is so easy! šŸš

I use this simple recipe for all sorts of meals, whether it’s a sashimi rice bowl, homemade onigiri or even kimbap. With just a few basic ingredients, you can easily make your own seasoned rice at home without having to buy ready-made seasoning.

Once you start making your favourite dishes at home, you might find yourself craving restaurant meals a little less! šŸ˜†

Here’s how I do it!

Ingredients

For the rice
1 cup short-grain rice
Water, as required

For the vinegared rice seasoning
3 tbsp apple cider vinegar (or white distilled vinegar)
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp sugar

Method

1. Cook the rice

• Rinse the short-grain rice until the water runs mostly clear.

• Cook according to your rice cooker’s usual instructions.

2. Prepare the seasoning

• In a small bowl, mix the vinegar, salt and sugar until the salt and sugar have dissolved.

3. Season the rice

• Once the rice is cooked, pour the vinegar seasoning evenly over the rice.

4 Mix gently

• Use a rice paddle to gently fold the seasoning into the rice.

5. Cool and serve

• Allow the rice to cool to room temperature before using it for sushi, rice bowls or other Japanese dishes.

šŸ’”Tips:

• Adjust the sugar and salt to suit your taste.

• Mix the seasoning into the rice while it is still warm so it absorbs the flavours more evenly.

• Keep the rice covered with a clean cloth while cooling to prevent it from drying out.
