Kailan isn’t exactly the most exciting vegetable for kids, especially with its naturally bitter taste. But somehow, this Beef Kailan has become the kids’ new favourite way of eating it!
The tender, savoury beef makes the kailan so much more appealing, and before I know it, they’re happily slurping up every last bit with their rice. If this is what it takes to get the kids eating their greens, I’m definitely not complaining!
Here’s how I do it!
Ingredients
For the beef
120–150g beef slices
½ tbsp oyster sauce
½ tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp Huadiao wine
1 tbsp corn starch
For the stir-fry
Kailan, cut, washed and spun dry
Garlic, minced
Cooking oil
A little oyster sauce, to taste
Method
• Mix the beef slices with ½ tbsp oyster sauce, ½ tbsp light soy sauce and 1 tbsp Huadiao wine. Leave to marinate for 15 minutes.
• Add 1 tbsp corn starch to the beef and mix well. Leave to marinate for another 15 minutes.
• Heat some oil in a wok over medium-high heat. Add the beef slices and fry until just cooked and lightly browned. Remove the beef and set aside.
• Add a little more oil to the wok, then sauté the minced garlic until fragrant.
• Add the kailan and stir-fry until it starts to soften. Add a little oyster sauce and mix well.
• Return the fried beef slices to the wok and toss everything together briefly.
• Serve warm with steamed rice.
