As Annie recently got her braces, she hasn’t been able to eat much — every bite feels like a challenge. So lately, I’ve been on a little mission to find soft, nourishing foods that still feel comforting and tasty. That’s how I ended up experimenting with sweet potatoes, inspired by the ones we always buy from Don Don Donki.
And did you know sweet potatoes aren’t just delicious — they’re naturally packed with vitamins, rich in antioxidants, high in fibre, and gentle enough for sore braces days? The air fryer has become my secret weapon for turning them into soft, caramelised, melt-in-your-mouth bites that she happily eats.
Here’s how I do it!
Ingredients
Japanese sweet potatoes (as many as you like, similar size for even cooking)
Method
1. Prep the sweet potatoes
• Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly.
• Pat dry. You can leave the skin on.
2. First cook (low and slow)
• Place the sweet potatoes in the air fryer basket.
• Air fry at 160ºC for 40 minutes. This ensures they cook evenly inside.
3. Crisp the outside
• Increase the temperature to 200ºC and air fry for 10–15 minutes until the skin is slightly crisp and caramelised.
4. Check doneness
• Pierce with a fork or skewer—sweet potatoes should be soft inside.
5. Serve
• Let cool slightly before serving.
• Enjoy as is, or drizzle with a little honey or butter if desired.
