Sambal Goreng is an everyday comfort for those who love a little spice. Sweet, savoury, and packed with umami, it turns humble ingredients like tempeh, tofu and french beans into a flavourful stir-fry that’s perfect with rice any day of the week.
Here’s how I do it!
Ingredients
1 pack tempeh, cubed and fried until golden
1 firm tofu, cubed and fried until golden
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 shallots, sliced
2-3 tbsp sambal (store-bought)
1 tbsp kecap manis
Water, to moisten
Method
1. Prepare the vegetables & protein
• Fry tempeh and tofu until golden, set aside.
• Remove and set aside.
2. Cook the sambal base
• In the same pan, heat 1 tbsp oil.
• Sauté garlic and shallots in oil until fragrant.
• Add in french beans and stir-fry for 2–3 mins until just tender but still crisp.
• Add store-bought sambal (add more if you like it spicy) and fry for 2 mins until fragrant.
• Stir in kecap manis and moisten with some water.
3. Combine everything
• Add fried tempeh and tofu back into the pan.
• Toss well until evenly coated with sambal.
4. Serve
• Enjoy hot with steamed rice.
