Eomuk Bokkeum is a quick and flavourful Korean side dish made with stir-fried fish cakes, vegetables, and a savoury-sweet glaze. It’s a classic banchan (side dish) that’s perfect with rice and easy to prepare in under 15 minutes.
Ingredients
½ pack Korean Fish Cake, sliced
½ carrot, julienned
½ onion, sliced thinly
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp Oligo Syrup
Water to moisten
1 tbsp neutral oil (for frying)
Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish
Method
1. Prepare the Ingredients
• Slice the fish cake sheets into bite-sized strips.
• Prepare the vegetables: slice the onion, julienne the carrot, and mince the garlic.
2. Stir-Fry the Ingredients
• Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat.
• Add the garlic and stir for 30 seconds until fragrant.
• Add the fish cakes, onion, and carrot. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes until lightly golden and vegetables are slightly softened.
3. Add the Sauce
• In the same pan, add the sauces. Stir everything well so the sauce evenly coats the fish cake and vegetables.
• Cook for another 1–2 minutes, then turn off the heat.
4. Finish and Serve
• Drizzle with sesame oil.
• Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds before serving.
Eomuk Bokkeum is savoury, slightly sweet, and full of umami—a comforting side dish that’s great hot or cold, and perfect for meal prepping or lunch boxes.
